Halo: Campaign Evolved Is the Final Nail in the Coffin for the Xbox Exclusive but in Truth the PS5 Version Comes as No Surprise
Halo, once the flagship Xbox exclusive, the video game Microsoft launched its first console with, has finally jumped ship. Microsoft has announced Halo: Campaign Evolved a remake of the original games campaign and its coming to PlayStation 5 day one.The Unreal Engine 5 remake of the Bungie-developed 2001 campaign is set for launch in 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and, crucially, PS5. It is the first new Halo game since 2021s Halo Infinite, and the first Halo ever to release on a PlayStation console. IGN has played Halo: Campaign Evolved and has all the details right here, including first info on the new three-mission prequel story arc. And yes, if you were wondering, theres crossplay, which means Xbox, PC, and PlayStation owners can play Halo co-op together for the first time.Halo: Campaign Evolved is the final nail in the coffin for the Xbox exclusive, then, although in truth the shooter series release on PlayStation does not come as any surprise. Xbox Game Studios is already one of the most prolific and successful publishers on PlayStation, and just this week Xbox president Sarah Bond called the idea of exclusive games antiquated, so Microsofts thinking on this is crystal clear. But what has prompted Microsofts multiplatform push? A recent Bloomberg report alleged that Microsoft is pushing Xbox studios to deliver a 30% margin much higher than the industry average and one of the ways studios can help bring in more money is by releasing their games on rival platforms, such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch as well as PC.One prominent critic of the exclusive is former president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden, who last year said that when a video games costs exceed $200 million, exclusivity is your Achilles heel.It reduces your addressable market, Layden told GamesBeat, before citing the success of Arrowheads Helldivers 2, which launched on PlayStation 5 and PC to explosive success. Particularly when youre in the world of live service gaming or free-to-play. Another platform is just another way of opening the funnel, getting more people in. In a free-to-play world, as we know, 95% of those people will never spend a nickel. The business is all about conversion. You have to improve your odds by cracking the funnel open. Helldivers 2 has shown that for PlayStation, coming out on PC at the same time. Again, you get that funnel wider. You get more people in.Layden said single-player games have a similar audience consideration as multiplayer games, though not exactly the same. For single-player games its not the same exigency, he said. But if youre spending $250 million, you want to be able to sell it to as many people as possible, even if its just 10% more.Laydens comments echo those of former Xbox boss Peter Moore, who in a recent interview with IGN suggested Microsoft will be debating internally whether to release Xbox poster-child Halo on PlayStation. If Microsoft says, wait, we're doing $250 million on our own platforms, but if we then took Halo as, let's call it a third-party, we could do a billion You got to think long and hard about that, right? Moore said. I mean, you just got to go, yeah, should it be kept? It's a piece of intellectual property. It's bigger than just a game. And how do you leverage that? Those are the conversations that always happen with, how do you leverage it in everything that we would do?Microsofts stance on exclusives has become one of the biggest talking points in the Xbox community, and that conversation will only grow louder now we know Halo has made the jump to PlayStation. Microsofts approach is in stark contrast to Nintendo and Sonys. Nintendo has the most hardline policy on its games, releasing them on its consoles only. Sony has softened its approach in recent years, releasing its multiplayer, live service games on PC at the same time as PlayStation (and in the case of Helldivers 2, eventually on Xbox). But Sony still refuses to launch its big single-player games on anything other than PlayStation day one (the latest example of this is Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei). Now Campaign Evolved is confirmed for PS5, there is no going back for Halo. Indeed, it seems Halo is from this day forward as much a PlayStation game as it is an Xbox game. Speaking tonight on a panel at the Halo World Championships 2025, Halo Community Director, Brian Jarrard, teased: "It's really a new era. Halo is on PlayStation going forward, starting with Halo: Campaign Evolved."Be sure to check out everything announced at Halo Studios Halo: Campaign Evolved panel for more.Wesley is Director, News at IGN. Razer Launches a New Gaming Collection That's Somehow Even Greener
Yo dawg, Razer heard you like gaming green, so it greened its gaming gear so you can green while you game. What I mean to say is that Razer has announced a new Esports Green Collection that washes several of its esports-coded mice, keyboards, and other gaming accessories in an intense, searing green. Remember the Razer Phantom Green Collection? This is, uh, a bit more intense. Okay, a lot more.Among the controllers getting this super green treatment is the Kitsune Esports arcade-style joystick controller, which IGN selected as one of the best you can get for fighting games on PC. Other green edition controllers include the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro for Xbox or Xbox and PC and the Raiju V3 Pro for PlayStation consoles, as well as the BlackShark V3 Pro, one of our favorite gaming headsets. The company has also released a Huntsman V3 Pro Tenkeyless 8KHz Esports Green Edition. Here, have a look:None of this gear is cheap on a good day, and most of the Esports Green ones will be even pricier than their normie counterparts, by $10 in most cases. Here's the full list, with prices:Viper V3 Pro Esports Green Edition gaming mouse ($169.99) DeathAdder V4 Pro Esports Green Edition gaming mouse ($179.99) Huntsman V3 Pro Tenkeyless 8KHz Esports Green Edition mechanical keyboard ($249.99) BlackShark V3 Pro Esports Green Edition PC or Xbox headsets ($259.99) Wolverine V3 Pro Esports Green Edition PC/Xbox controller ($209.99) Wolverine V3 Pro 8K PC Esports Green Edition gamepad ($209.99) Kitsune Esports Green Edition ($309.99) Razer says it's also releasing an Esports Green edition of the Raiju V3 Pro PS5 controller, but is waiting for regulatory clearance. Presumably that has something to do with President Trump's ongoing tariff situation that's been wreaking havoc with all sorts of imported gadgetry, gaming and otherwise. Gaming Laptops Are a Better Deal Than The Xbox Ally X
Were fresh off the release of the Xbox Ally X, and it doesnt seem like handheld gaming PCs are going anywhere anytime soon. At least for me, handhelds have become my go-to way of playing my Steam among other PC game stores library when Im not at my desk. In a lot of ways, these little devices have replaced much of what I used gaming laptops for, especially during a commute or a short trip. This makes me wonder: why would you buy a gaming laptop in 2025 when PC gaming handhelds are getting more powerful and portable year after year? If all youre looking for is an alternate device to play your games on the go, the prospects for gaming laptops seem to be thinning. However, now that handheld gaming PCs are getting more expensive, its once again getting harder to draw a clear line. Handheld Gaming PCs Have Come a Long WayHandheld gaming PCs arent a new thing. Depending on who you ask, you can trace the form factor back to 2010 with the Pandora a Linux based handheld that wasnt much larger than the Nintendo DS but the Steam Deck is responsible for the explosion in more mainstream handheld PC devices these days. After all, it was affordable, and had a user experience that didnt require you to be an expert to navigate. In the roughly three years since the Steam Deck launched, it seems like every major computer manufacturer has jumped at the chance to craft its own handheld gaming machines. But because a company like Lenovo cant subsidize its hardware costs with software sales like Valve can, these other devices have been more expensive than the Deck.Regardless of which modern handheld you pick up, though, you can still play pretty much any game on it, as long as you temper your expectations when it comes to graphics quality. You dont need to lug around a heavy gaming laptop just to get some time in Path of Exile 2 on the road. The Pricing ProblemBut gaming laptops arent just more unwieldy than a handheld PC theyre generally more expensive, too. Even if devices like the Xbox Ally X and the Legion Go 2 are balked at because of their high prices, gaming laptops have always been kind of expensive. Even entry-level devices, like the Acer Nitro V start at around $900 right now, with an RTX 5050 and a Core i7 processor. And thats the low-end. High-end gaming laptops can get much, much more expensive. Our favorite gaming laptop right now is the Razer Blade 16, which is a premium device that looks like an edgy MacBook Pro. But that svelte design comes with a high price, starting at $1,899 with an RTX 5060 much more expensive than even the Legion Go 2. You can also upgrade that laptop to an RTX 5090 if you want to spend $4,499. To be fair, thatll be much more powerful than any handheld device on the market right now, and probably for years to come. Handhelds, on the other hand, were initially supposed to be these secondary devices we used in addition to our gaming PCs or laptops thats how I use mine. That was a much easier sell with the Steam Deck. I bought the Steam Deck at launch for $529, which came with a 256GB SSD. Is it as powerful as my PC? Hell no, but I primarily use it to play Ball x Pit in bed while I listen to a podcast. You can substitute any recent gaming PC in that equation, too, and Im probably using it in the same way. But as much as I love many of the handhelds Ive used in the last couple years, I dont know if I would have ever got into them if the Steam Deck cost a thousand bucks.Gaming laptops are meant to be your primary computer, and theyre powerful enough to play most games at a higher resolution and with better visual quality than a handheld. And theyre also able to do a lot more than just play your games. Gaming Laptops Arent Going AnywhereI spend a lot of time on a handheld Ive reviewed a lot of them now but Im always returning to my PC, because it lets me play my games, and also get stuff done. Theres just something nice about a device that lets you play something like World of Warcraft between Adobe Premiere sessions. And, really, thats what gaming laptops offer and something handheld PCs continue to struggle with, even as they start to have laptop-like price tags. Because while a lot of handhelds are launching with a full-fat version of Windows running on them, they have a long way to go before they can truly replace gaming laptops. Arguably, they even have a long way to go before theyre easy to use for just gaming. The Xbox Full Screen Experience did a lot to address the user experience side of things, giving Windows a controller-friendly UI where you can launch games or open Edge, but it wont let you do much beyond that. If you want to get some work done on the Xbox Ally X, thats certainly possible, but you have to get into the desktop and likely connect a keyboard and a mouse to even be able to use most productivity apps. And youll probably want to connect it to an external display, too. Its certainly possible to use a handheld like you would any other PC, but it requires so many extra steps that its probably not actually worth it. Instead, for most people that only need one PC, a gaming laptop simply makes more sense, especially as the price delta between them continues to narrow. Youll be able to play games better, while also being able to do all the daily tasks we all have without having to plug two or more accessories into a USB dongle to do it. Handheld gaming PCs are better as companions to your main gaming rig, especially if you already have a large Steam library to tap into. Im not sure what the suits over at Lenovo and Asus are thinking, but it seems like a bad idea to have a secondary device be as expensive as a gaming laptop. The iBuypower Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming PC Can Run Games in 4K for Just $1,530
If you're looking to upgrade your gaming PC and want to keep your budget to about $1,500, then one deal stands out above all the rest. Walmart is offering a well-equipped iBuypower Slate gaming PC for just $1,529.99 with free delivery. It features a liquid-cooled AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. The Radeon RX 9070 XT is an outstanding GPU that can run games in 4K, even the latest titles such as Borderlands 4 and Battlefield 6.iBuypower Slate Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming PC $1530The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is still one of the best gaming CPUsThe AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D has an established reputation of being one of the best gaming CPUs available. It's a slightly older model that has been replaced by the newer Ryzen 9 98000X3D, but it is still one of the best gaming CPUs you can get today. According to Passmark, the 7800X3D's gaming performance surpasses that of the latest generation Intel Core Ultra 7 265K. The 7800X3D is also more efficient than the 9800X3D, which means it will consume less power and produce less heat (and thus less noise because your fans don't need to spin as fast). The Radeon RX 9070 XT can run most games in 4K at 60fps or higherWe rated the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT a "perfect" 10/10. Even though it costs $150 less than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, the 9070 XT beats it out in several of the games we tested. In a few benchmarks, the results aren't even close. The 9070 XT is also comparable in performance to the older $1,000 RX 7900 XTX but with better ray tracing and upscaling performance than its predecessor. It does lose out on VRAM (16GB vs 24GB), but that isn't really an issue for gaming. By "4K ready" I mean that this gaming PC can run pretty much any game at 4K resolution and at framerates of 60fps or higher. Any video card that's weaker and you'll have to compromise in order to get playable framerates. AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Review by Jacqueline Thomas"PC Gaming has been in a decadent spiral since 2020, and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is a reminder that it doesnt have to be that way. This graphics card has no problem maxing out any game you throw at it at 4K, even with ray tracing enabled, and does so at a price that makes the competition look downright greedy. I cant predict the future, so only time will tell if the launch price holds up. What I do know is we need more graphics cards like the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT."Hardware Unboxed Benched the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Graphics Card During the Battlefield 6 Open BetaFor those of you looking to upgrade your rig for Battlefield 6, which comes out Friday, Hardware Unboxed tested out a few different Radeon RX 9070 XT configurations in-game. At 4K and with the maximum "Ultra" preset, the RX 9070 XT rig maintained an average of 70-85fps with a 1% low of 67fps. This was tested with both lower-end AMD Ryzen 5 and higher-end AMD Ryzen 7 X3D processors and the performance difference was minimal, especially at higher resolutions (1440p and 4K) where games are typically less CPU limited. What's also impressive is that the GeForce RTX 5080 equipped PC only averaged about 8%-12% better, even though that GPU would cost you $1,000 or more.Eric Song is the IGN commerce manager in charge of finding the best gaming and tech deals every day. 24 years later, Halo's most infamous level is getting fixed as the remake devs try to bring "better wayfinding, navigation, and diversity in enemy encounters" to The Library
Halo: Combat Evolved is a beloved game full of memorable levels, but its most famous stage is more often remembered for the wrong reasons. The Library is the part Halo fans warn series newcomers about, and the devs behind the upcoming remake aim to make an array of changes to fix the infamous stage. The upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved will feature an array of changes to improve the pacing and playability of certain stages, and in an Xbox Wire post breaking down the remake, the devs are very explicit about the implications: "Yes, we mean The Library.""We learned from Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary that there was still an appetite for things like better wayfinding, navigation, and diversity in enemy encounters," creative director Max Szlagor says. "In The Library specifically, which features several Flood encounters, we wanted to reevaluate the pacing and enhance the environmental storytelling. We've added new lines to Guilty Spark, which guide players through the level, and theres new dialogue that gives more insight into the narrative as it plays out."It's been years since I last played Halo 1, but even with that distance from it, I still remember The Library mostly as a seemingly endless series of hallways where the fleshy Flood enemies would keep pouring out of the rafters. The level's reputation may overstate just how bad it is you're still playing Halo at the end of the day, so there's a limit to how terrible it can be but it's certainly a low point of the campaign. There are other tweaks to the campaign, too, with weapons and vehicles from later entries appearing here. The game also now supports four-player co-op, which means the devs "had to think about how all of the original encounters and spaces can scale to accommodate that many players," according to Szlagor. In the end, though, even with some bigger changes coming to a level like The Library, the developers are "not changing the stories, its about refining and adding context to this moment, and other levels like it, so players can stay on track."These are the best FPS games you can play today.

"A live-service game to me isn't really a game," former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden says: "I need a story, I need a character, and I need a world"
PlayStation spent years building up its brand as the premiere home for big, AAA, story-driven blockbusters, and to say that its big pivot to live-service gaming has been met with skepticism would be a massive understatement. Shawn Layden, who served as head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios from 2014 through 2019, is among the skeptics in fact, he doesn't believe live-service titles are real games at all."A live-service game to me isn't really a game. It's a repetitive action engagement device," Layden tells The Ringer."For me, a game because of where I come from means I need three things. I need a story, I need a character, and I need a world. And Horizon, God of War, and Uncharted have all three of those things. If youre doing a live-service game, you just need a repetitive action that most people can get their head around, an ability to communicate in that world with other like-minded people, and [the player's] desire to do it again and again and again."Layden says that live-service gaming is "not my skillset," and Sony's pressure to deemphasize single-player titles is part of why he left the company in 2019. Ironically, Helldivers 2 which Layden himself takes credit for greenlighting before his departure has proven to be PlayStation's only unequivocal live-service success in recent years. (Furthering that irony is the fact that developer Arrowhead aims to fully self-fund its next game.)In Layden's mind, the push for live-service gaming is a "sirens call" for publishers. "It's like a mirage on the top of a sand dune," he says. "You pursue it. You can't quite get there. Or if you do get there, what you brought to the party no one wants to play anyway."Sony's own The Last of Us Online game is one example of a title that couldn't quite get there, and you can easily point to Concord as an example of one that nobody or, more fairly, not enough people wanted to play. Current SIE CEO Hermen Hulst says the publisher is now investing in "much more rigorous and more frequent testing.""The highway is littered with people wanting to take on Fortnite, with people trying to do Overwatch with different skins," Layden says. He adds, "If you're trying to go into that space because you have this illusion in your mind of big sacks of money coming every day for the rest of your life, for most it doesnt happen."We'll soon see if Bungie's Marathon can turn Sony's live-service fortunes around, but it's going to take serious work to tear people away from the best online games they're already playing.

Silent Hill f's Hinako actor is playing her own game on stream and I feel bad for how hard I'm laughing at her terror
Silent Hill f is a game with many freaky sights and sounds, and it's very clear that not even the actor who voiced and mo-capped main character Hinako is immune to its horrors.Over on the official Silent Hill f YouTube channel, you can watch about 90 minutes of Hinako actor Konatsu Kato anxiously exploring the beginning of the game, wincing in horror at some of the grotesque imagery, and letting out exacerbated sighs after being defeated in battle. Some of her facial expressions our genuinely priceless, even if I feel slightly guilty for finding so much amusement in her discomfort. Regardless, here some of my favorites:(Image credit: Konami)(Image credit: Konami)(Image credit: Konami)(Image credit: Konami)(Image credit: Konami)You can watch the full stream below. Naturally, it's in Japanese, but the machine-translated subtitles provide some probably imprecise but nonetheless entertaining accompaniments to what you're seeing on screen. I think my favorite part of the whole stream is around the 55:30 mark, when Kato inspects a bloody mask and recoils in horror, before turning it around, seeing the face, and reeling even further back into pure disgust."No, no, no, I don't want to do anything. What is this? What? What? What?" she exclaims. Right after that is a chase scene in which a visibly frightened Kato seems to very nearly give up, saying, "I can't take this anymore," "How long should I do this?" and, upon coming face to face with her pursuer, "stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, wait a minute, stop."Alright, this is all starting to feel a little cruel, so I'm signing off here. That said, I will absolutely be back for the next video. This one's titled Silent Hill f #1, so it's safe to assume Kato plans on streaming more of the game, unless this seemingly traumatizing experience scared her off for good. Let's hope not.Silent Hill series producer says Konami announcing SH2 remake, f, and Townfall all at once was so fans could "feel how serious we were" about reviving the horror series

Ex-PlayStation boss says the games industry is "littered" with Fortnite clones and "people trying to do Overwatch with different skins," but keep dreaming if you're just trying to get "big sacks of money"
If you're a video game developer with dreams of making it rich in the live-service space, former SIE chairman Shawn Layden says those might instead be illusions of grandeur. It's no secret that certain corners of the game industry have become oversaturated, and although the frighteningly unpredictable downsizings that have been going on might argue otherwise, I don't see that changing any time soon with the expansion of the indie market and, sadly, the proliferation of AI.One genre in particular that Layden views as being particularly crowded at the current moment is live-service, which he says is a pie in the sky for many developers and companies hoping to make a bundle on their next game and, increasingly, offset production costs with the types of recurring revenue live-service offers with paid updates, battle passes, etc."The highway is littered with people wanting to take onFortnite, with people trying to doOverwatchwith different skins," Layden told The Ringer. (It's hard not to note the irony in Sony's Marvel Rivals existing in the context of these comments.)"If you're trying to go into that space because you have this illusion in your mind of big sacks of money coming every day for the rest of your life, for most it doesn't happen."Apparently, Layden's distaste for the live-service genre extends beyond its bloat, as he also told The Ringer he doesn't view live-service games as games, preferring to call them "repetitive action engagement device[s]" and saying he prefers games with rich characters, stories, and worlds.Another studio known for single-player games takes the live service gamble: Heavy Rain dev is making a competitive multiplayer game even as "development of Star Wars: Eclipse continues"

God of War actor Christopher Judge says he hopes a potential sequel will take place in Egypt, but "I have no doubt that no matter what pantheon it is, it will be great"
Christopher Judge, the iconic booming voice behind Kratos from Sony Santa Monica's God of War series, says his hope for the series' next game is an entry taking place in Egypt, which indeed sounds pretty rad.During a panel at MCM London Comic Con, sent to GamesRadar+ via press release, Judge seemingly let slip, and then retracted, the potential existence of a third game in Sony's rebooted God of War series. The last entry was 2022's God of War Ragnarok, which was a triumphant success critically and commercially, but has yet to spawn a follow-up, at least not that we know."Because I became best known as Teal'c from Stargate, to go to Egypt would be a completion of my circle," Judge said. "But whatever is decided - wait if there is another game, I have no doubt that no matter what pantheon it is, it will be great."A God of War game set in ancient Egypt is definitely an intriguing proposal, and presumably would be a massive visual and thematic shakeup from previous entries, not to mention a cool full circle moment for Judge.Still, a post-Ragnarok God of War game has yet to be announced, or even teased, by PlayStation, and Judge's comments by no means confirm a follow-up. Still, both 2018's God of War and Ragnarok were incredibly well-received games with strong sales, and without spoiling anything, Ragnarok definitely leaves the door open for a sequel. This is all to say, whether or not Judge actually goofed and revealed something he wasn't supposed to, I'd be surprised if Sony decides against continuing the series. And after three long years, I'm definitely ready to return to that world.God of War Ragnarok lead says AAA studios should "diversify into double-A and single-A, and then perhaps indie" even if blockbuster releases result in "potentially really large" payoffs
